The galaxy M81 is the largest galaxy in the M81 Group and is in gravitational interaction with the neighboring and smaller galaxy M82. The interaction triggers starburst activity in M82, which results in a significant number of supernova explosions. These energies causes gas outflows such as galactic fountains perpendicular to the galactic midplane. The interaction with M81 also causes tidal forces which explains the deformation of M82.
